[size=4]在中国媒体上，中式英语是永恒的话题之一。雷人指数与搞笑指数双高。昨天的《广州日报》就刊登了这么一则新闻：
一些景区忽视社会文化、价值观念、审美趣味等方面的差异，出现中英文不符、译名不统一、字字对应等诸多翻译失误。例如西樵山一标识牌上写着“大力提倡‘五讲、四美、三热爱’：We advocate ‘Five Stresses，Four Beauties (四个美人) and Three Loves (三个情人)’。”
说实在的，把外交部的翻译高手请来，对这“五讲四美三热爱”这样的高等数学缩略语，也会张口结舌。除非他还记得，这“五讲四美三热爱”的具体内容，一条条地说一遍，否则没人能听懂。

stress on manners (讲礼貌)
stress on hygiene (讲卫生)

love of the socialism (热爱社会主义)
love of the Chinese Communist Party (热爱中国共产党)
汉语中类似的缩略语还有很多，比如“一国两制”、“两岸三地”、“三个代表”、“四个现代化”……。比“五讲四美三热爱”更难翻译的，还有“八荣八耻”。有人翻译成eight do’s and eight don’ts，也有人翻译为take the eight glorious merits against eight shameful behaviors，新华网的翻译是eight honors，eight disgraces：
-- love the country; do it no harm.
-- serve the people; do no disservice.
-- follow science; discard ignorance.
-- be diligent; not indolent.
-- be united, help each other; make no gains at other's expense.
-- be honest and trustworthy; do not spend ethics for profits.
-- be disciplined and law-abiding; not chaotic and lawless.
-- live plainly, struggle hard; do not wallow in luxuries and pleasures.
看来中国人喜欢用数字来概括很庄重的概念。英语中似乎很少把数字缩略法用在政治概念上，只是在某些特定的场合会用到。比如美国密执根州，有个地方叫Onekama，美国有人把这个地名简写为“1,”(读one comma)。
还有我们现在天天都会遇到的3G可以指Third-generation mobile telephone system。不过，在英语中，以数字为基础的缩略语，在短信、网上聊天上出现的频率很高。就拿从前面所说的“eight do’s and eight don’ts”中的eight为例，在英文短信和网上聊天时可以看到这样的缩略语：
2L8=Too late
L8R=later
STR8=strait
W8=wait
其他数字，也可以用来做网上缩略语。比如2这个词因为与too谐音，所以使用频率也不低，除了前面已经说过的2L8，还有：
U2=you too
Me2=me too
G2G=gotta to go
还有，中国人不大喜欢的4字，在英语中发音因为与for相近，所以也衍生出了一些缩略语：
4GM=forgive me
?4U=question for you
B4=before
B4N=bye for now
但是，如果你在手机短信或者网上聊天时，看到“404”，与for完全没有关系。如果看不懂，那就对了。因为这个缩略语的含义就是clueless，其来源是下面这个图：
